Definitions of terms used on this website.

01

Scenario

A defined set of assumptions and conditions used to explore an energy-system question. A scenario is not a prediction or a guarantee.

02

Substrate

The data shared across a study, including energy types, geography, markets, sectors and time periods.

03

Carrier

A type of energy in a study, such as electricity, hydrogen, gas or heat. The types included depend on the model.

04

Granularity

How much detail a model uses for places, assets and time periods. More detail needs more data and computing resources.

05

Climate year

A set of weather-related conditions used to explore how demand and renewable resources affect a scenario.

06

Run and lineage

A run executes a model or analysis. Its record shows the inputs, versions and assumptions used to produce the result.

07

Levelised cost

A cost-per-unit measure calculated under a defined methodology and assumption set. LCOE refers to electricity; LCOH commonly refers to hydrogen.

08

Approval gate

A point at which a proposed action needs authorisation before it proceeds. Interpretation of a request is not itself approval.

09

Atlas

Nohm’s map view of energy data and models. Check the source, date and study area of the data shown.

10

Studio

A workspace for a class of tasks, such as analysis, visualisation or reporting, subject to product availability and user permissions.
